It looks like a start-up issue indeed. Looking at handle_exposed_banner(), we're getting fe->info == NULL at the beginning. What is funny is that switching to a VT, then going back to X triggers the appropriate behaviour: the message is then written on the banner as expected. Not quite sure how to fix this issue at the moment. Mraw, KiBi.
