Bug#700688: Brief install report: Toshi L850/046

Package: installation-reports

A brief report of installing on a new Toshi L850/046

Boot method: CD
Image Version: Debian GNU/Linux testing "Wheezy" - Official Snapshot amd64
xfce-CD Binary-1 20130211-05:00

Machine: Toshiba L850/046
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz
Memory: 4GB

Many thing worked, but...

* Initial scrambled/torn display, see Bug#700598 for full description
and workaround.

* Non-graphical installation appeared to have keyboard lockup. Re-tried
graphical install OK. This may have been only confusion relating to
Caps-lock and Fn keys below.

* Keyboard Caps-lock indicator non-functional.  Caps-lock actually
works OK, but doesn't come on. Same with external keyboard.
FWIW, Num-lock works and displays fine.

* To operate keys F2 through F7 (and possible beyond, but NOT F1) on
the system keyboard, it is necessary to press the Fn key. Maybe this
is some kind of feature, but it's certainly frustrating when trying to
swithch between VTs. External USB keyboard does NOT exhibit this
behaviour.

* The big one: Video card is (from lspci):
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI
Thames XT/GL [Radeon HD 7600M Series]
This appears to unsupported in X :-( Looking for updates/workarounds.

The machine came with Win8 pre-installed. Before installing Debian:
* disabled secure boot
* Shrank ~900 GB Win partition to ~300 GB, with GParted live CD.

Debian installation went OK, resulting in working system (text mode).
Perfunctory testing suggests the Win8 installation remains functional.

Using tasksel to pull in the Debian Desktop task installs X. See
above re ATI Radeon.

Thanks,
Neale.
