Thanks everyone for the time spent on investigating the issue, but as
you have discovered, there's more or less no way to know where
syslinux was booted from in the USB case (at least some greps didn't
reveal the wanted info), so being quite generic and trying to present
all sensible devices/partitions, possibly with a nice default looks
like the way to go.

For the record, that's something I'd like to get for rc2; some wording
for a rc1 errata would be nice (please note that's been a problem for
all wheezy pre-releases, and probably for all squeeze ones too). Not
sure we'll fix that for squeeze, will see how the patch looks like
when the work is done…
