Package: debian-installer
Version: N/A; reported 2005-06-02
Severity: wishlist

Adam Zey suggested to me that we could use netselect-apt to look for the
closest Debian mirror when doing an installation. This would allow
users to just choose which source method (cdrom, http, ftp, etc) and get
a reasonably fast sources.list.

netselect-apt, unlike apt-spy, is pretty fast at searching through the
list of mirrors. In the event that even this is too slow, one could
have it only select from mirrors in the same country the machine is in.

I understand that netselect-apt is written in bash, which isn't part of
the debian-installer image. It's not very complicated though, so it
could quite easily be rewritten in POSIX shell.

In this bug report, Filippo suggested using netselect to check for the
fastest mirror.

I think this is now well covered by supporting cdn.debian.net geoIP'd
service and, therefore, I'm closing this bug report.

Please reopen if you disagree.
