There are two regressions, but both seem related to the same thing. If grub is
rebuilt with --enable-lzo and GRUB_KERNEL_MACHINE_DATA_END is decreased to 0x4c,
we get a working setup again.
I suspect in both cases it has something to do with GRUB_KERNEL_MACHINE_RAW_SIZE
miscalculation.
