It also says:
Put only a single space or tab between type and value: any additional 
whitespace will be interpreted as belonging to the value.

That can be expanded to "any additional whitespace inside the value is 
interpreted as belonging to the value. However, you are correct that we 
do not explicitly mention it.

Another reason your preseed file is incorrect is that you're missing a tab 
or space after "tasksel tasksel/first     multiselect". An empty value is 
allowed, but you still need the separator between the type and the value.
It may well be that that is the real cause for the error.
