Used the "easy" method of writing a bootable filesystem onto the USB stick. This worked well, but it was slightly disconcerting when I realized I had trashed the partition table and thus made the usb stick appear much smaller than it actually is (obvious in retrospect, but...). 2. USB keyboard didn't work at boot prompt. Eventually solved by just enabling legacy usb keyboard support in bios. This is specifically warned about in the debian installer guide, but I had missed it. 3. The netinst cd .iso I had put on the USB stick turned out to be corrupt. I don't know where the corruption occured, and it was solved eventually by just re-downloading/copying the .iso, but it took me a while to figure out what was going on, as the error messages were slightly confusing. Basically in the installer, the "searching for .isos" step succeeded, but the next step failed with an error message like "Failed to copy file from CD-ROM". I found this error very hard to interpret. Opening a shell on another console and examining the mounted "cdrom" filesystem seemed to show what I expected, but eventually I found a file containing a list of md5sums for files on the filesystem, and these md5sums were not the same as what md5sum showed for the actual files. At that point I re-downloaded the .iso and started everything over, and it was fine this time. 4. At some point before I realized the that I had a corrupt .iso, I tried to boot the graphical installer (thinking maybe it would at least give a better error message). It "sort of" worked, but eventually went into a state where it would flash and redraw the screen repeatedly without accepting any input. The video hardware on this board (the 780G chipset's integrated "Radeon HD 3200") is fairly new, so I suppose the installer may not support it properly. didn't support it properly. [I gave up trying to use the graphical installer quickly and went back to using the text-mode installer.] 5. At the partitioning step, I selected LVM + guided partioning, with swap, /tmp, /var, /usr, /home partitions. The initial automatic setup of the LVM logical volumes (LVs) went fine. However, I decided I'd also like to tweak the resulting LVs; I wanted to: a) Expand the /usr LV. b) Shrink the swap "partition" (LV) [The automatically chosen swap size seems excessive for 4GB of ram] c) Split the /home LV in half, and use the freed-up space for a new /usr/local LV These actions seem reasonably simple, but I found I basically couldn't do them using the UI: a) The UI could only change LV size in one direction (don't remember which one offhand). b) I tried to split the /home LV by deleting it, and creating a new /home LV in the resulting free area with half the size. That went fine, but the now freed up "second half" (of the old /home LV) was marked in the UI as being "unusable"! c) Because things were getting annoying, I then tried to delete all LVs in UI, with the intention of recreating them by hand. However, even after deleting all of them, the UI didn't coalesce the "free" LVs; instead it simply showed a bunch of "free space" LVs, one for each original LV. d) I decided I'd rather just redo the partitioning from scratch, so I exited the partitioner (without writing to disk) and tried again -- but the "bogus" state I had created before was still present, with a bunch of un-coalescable "free" LVs. Eventually I just gave up on using the partitioning UI, and used a subshell to invoke the various LVM "lv..." utilities to delete all logical volumes and create new LVs as I wished. That worked fine (the only difficulty being guessing how the lv... utilities worked based only on the --help output, since no man pages were available). Once the partioning problems were solved, the rest of the install went very smoothly (downloading packages over the network). When the install was finished, and the X window system started, the display was sort of screwed up (odd resolution, bottom 32 rows or so not displayed). I eventually realized this was just because the "radeon" X driver didn't support my video hardware correctly; upgrading to the version of X and radeon driver in "experimental" fixed this nicely. Good. :) I am only commenting on issues that you have encountered but not figured out afterwards. > 4. [I gave up trying to use the graphical > installer quickly and went back to using the text-mode installer.] "flash + redraw repeatedly" means that the cdebconf frontend segfaults or has a pretty bad issue. I would be interested if you could try it again with a more recent build if you have the opportunity to do so. > 5. Logical Volumes that needs to be changed have first to be deleted before being created again. Once the Logical Volumes are all good, their usage can be specified again after exiting the LVM screen. We are aware that it is suboptimal, but changing this is a fairly big task and will not be done for Lenny. > a) The UI could only change LV size in one direction (don't remember > which one offhand). Strange that you did not have the idea to look up in the "Configure the Logical Volume Manager" option. The manual is really lacking a good part about how to use partman, but no one took the job, yet. > When the install was finished, and the X window system started, the > display was sort of screwed up (odd resolution, bottom 32 rows or so not > displayed). That's outside the scope of the debian-installer. Let's hope X.org maintainters will fix this for Lenny. As you have managed to successfully install your system, and that all issues reported were already known, I am closing your bug report. Have fun with your shiny new Debian installation!
