Comments/Problems:

Please let me start by saying that he partition layout above is misguiding. I was actually installing to sda12 (ext3 var ), sda13 (xfs /) and sda14(xfs home) but I reformated those into one big partition as part of my attempt to overcome the issue that I would like to report. The current layout shows only one partition, viz. sda12, while I was installing to three.

As for the issue itself, the installer seemed to be doing fine until about 30% into setting up the base system, it failed to chroot into /var. After several failed attempts, I decided to reboot into Ubuntu hoping to find out from there what was going on. It failed to boot up completely. The boot messages indicated that it was having trouble mounting/recognizing the UUID for its own /var partition (sda8, ext3 as well and the same size). A quick look from single mode revealed that its /var partition was in fact empty, with the exception of a "crash" report (I tried to cat it but that failed). Inspecting the same partition from Fedora showed that the contents were still in sound condition. As I had suspected, I was able to restore Ubuntu to working condition after editing out all the UUID bits from its fstab file and replacing them with the more traditional /dev/sdxx entries.

So, apparently, the installer mistook the Ubuntu var partition for its own, which resulted in a failed install. It must also have taken over the original Ubuntu var UUID in the process since single mode directed me not the actual var partition but to the one that the installer had created.

I have not tried installing to any of the other drives so I cannot tell whether this anomaly would be reproduced. However, I can confirm that this is reallly the first time that I have come across this kind of issue.
