Just a quick thought before I rush to work: Couldn't we use the
$part/crypt_active file after crypto_setup?

  part=$(dev_to_devdir $dev)
  [ -f $part/crypt_active) ] || problem
  cryptdev=$(cat $part/crypt_active)
  cryptdevdir=$(dev_to_devdir $cryptdev)
