The preferred method to install individual packages from a script (e.g. preseed late) is to use apt-install. It is listed in this README file (sarge version): http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/d-i/tags/packages/debian-installer-utils/1.08/README?op=file&rev=0&sc=0 Note that this is run with the noninteractive debconf frontend, so you won't be able to do any configuration.
