Based on wha I have seen, the ATI chipset is pretty badly supported
until at least 2.6.12, and even there is still has bugs in some cases.
Using 2.4.27 is certainly not likely to work reliably, and even 2.6.8
isn't good either but may be better.
Try booting the installer with linux26 instead of the default kernel
(which is 2.4.27).
Better yet see if you can find one of the unofficial sarge install CDs
with a 2.6.12 or 2.4.31 kernel which might have better luck on the ATI
chipset. If it was an amd64 I would suggest using my sarge installer,
but I guess it isn't a 64bit machine.
