Comments/Problems:

Kernels and initrds for kernel 2.6.13 were installed automatically, and unexpectedly, on the boot device but would not boot; they could not see the LVM volumes. 2.6.12 was also installed and that worked.

This is a multi-boot test machine configured with LVM2 on top of software raid5. The LVM configuration was created with SuSE 10.0 OSS in advance of installing any other distros. This was done since, historically, Debian has shown me that it has problems with raid and LVM.

Tho bootable and X and Gnome installed fine, the raid disks were not seen by the Etch system until I installed mdadm and then the raid devices were configured with the already existing md1 being called mdo and existing md0 being called md1. I have seen this same behavior on non-LVM installtions when Debian Sarge or testing is installed on a machine with existing software raid configurations. FCx, SuSE, Mandriva, RHEL, etc do not show this type of behavior. I don't know which is correct.

In addition this install would not detect VolGroup01 until after mdadm was installed. This install detects all of the logical volumes, but will not mount any except the Debian-Etch_00 volume. I suspect the raid device mapping swap may be part of the problem.

On the other hand, I can mount the Debian logvol when SuSE10.0 is booted.

I will continue installing addition distros on this system and record the behavior of LVM with each.

Is there any other information that will be helpful?

Comment: The partitioner would be more useful if it detected and showed the existing partitions and layouts of raid and LVM with the initial screen. Instead, you have to go in to LVM and leave for the LVM vols to be seen. I have also seen this behavior with raid. It is confusing.
