Probably your partition layout has a minor problem which makes lilo in 
non-interactive mode fail.

What's wrong with learning new things? Especially if they offer 
improvements over the old...

You can install both grub and lilo on any partition you like in default 
mode also. For grub, just answer no to the very first question it asks 
("do you want to install on the MBR of the first disk"). It will then 
allow you to enter a different partition in either grub format "(hd0,3)" 
or clasic dev format "/dev/hda4".
