Comments/Problems:

Sid installer hangs, last message from various consoles:
  "Setting up Base-Config (2.71)"
  "Running /usr/lib/base-installer.d/40netcfg"
  "Configuring network... (1% complete)"

Opened new console, ps -ef shows:
  "run-debootstrap --components=main --debian-installer"

The base install was proceeding nicely, completing many
things, then hung after maybe a minute or two.

Allowed hang to continue for 45 minutes ... no change.

Verified over several install attempts ... normal mode,
expert mode, etc. Same. Tried with BOOT_DEBUG=2 and
DEBCONF_DEBUG=5. No additional info that would explain
the hang.

I guessed that at this point it might be trying to
download from the Internet. Only way I could think of
to check connectivity was to login to my router and view
realtime count of WAN packets. Nothing was going on
during the hang. Went to a different computer hooked up
to same router and verified WAN packets (on router display)
when using a web browser on that other computer. Therefore,
Internet connection appears to be OK at router.

Tried Debian install with both DHCP and manual. When trying
DHCP, I could see that the IP address assigned was 192.168.0.2,
exactly what I would expect my router to have assigned in
this case. I also unplugged CAT5 cable and verified that
kernel reported ethernet link down (it did). Replugged
cable and kernel reported link up. When setting up manually,
I used the same IP, gateway, netmask, etc. as the Win2k
installation that dual-boots on this same computer (Win2k
networking works fine). So it appears that my network setup
is basically sane.

I can stop the hang and return console 1 back to a functional
state (with errors displayed) by killing run-debootstrap
from a different console.

Tried dmesg, but I don't really know what this command does.
However the display was nothing related to network. dmesg was
displaying stuff about file systems (ext3, ReiserFS, NTFS, etc.)

Tried Etch installer (based on 2.6.8) but this did not detect
my SATA drive for the install. Known bug for pre-2.6.10
kernels and nForce3 chipsets I believe.

Tried default Sarge installer (based on 2.6.8???) and it did not
detect SATA either. Tried Sarge with "linux24" and it correctly
detected SATA, but did not detect onboard ethernet.

Prior to attempting Debian install, hardware was checked out
with Knoppox v3.9 (2.6.11) and Ubuntu 5.10-preview Live CD (2.6.12).
SATA disk was accessible. Onboard sound worked. Onboard ethernet
worked (could surf the web). This same computer runs Win2k OS
perfectly.

Any/all suggestions welcome. I am a Linux newbie, and really
know nothing much about this OS or Debian specifically. If
additional info would help, please be specific in saying how/where
I can find it.

Thanks!
