Comments/Problems:

Errors refer to a first attempt with the 2.4 kernel/initrd found at:
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/main/installer-i386/current/images/hd-media/
The modules for network card (3c59x) and LVM were not found.

Second attempt with Sid 2.6 kernel images found at:
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/sid/main/installer-i386/current/images/hd-media/2.6/
All modules were found.

More detail on the installation process : the hard disk was initial blank
(former disk had crashed). I could not burn a CD at the moment, so decided
to try the "hd-media" installation. First booted on a (pre-existing)
Knoppix Live-CD, used cfdisk to partition the disk, formatted hda1 and
hda3 as ext3, installed grub on hda1, downloaded installer ISO, kernel and
initrd into hda3. Put in the grub menu.lst file :
========================
title  New Install
kernel (hd0,2)/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 devfs=mount,dall ramdisk_size=17000
initrd (hd0,2)/initrd.gz
========================
Reboot went fine except I had to use Knoppix again to replace
kernel/initrd as explained above. I was then able to create the LVM
partitions.

The installation process was a breeze except for the installation of
additional packages which failed for an unknown reason. However I was at
this point able to quit the installer and install wanted packages with
apt-get.

So finally I won't have to know the dreaded old installation process !
(had a RH9 before)
