Comments/Problems:

Installed into a USB hard-drive.
partition went well (2x)
1st with recommmended partitioning,
2nd with a single partition.

BUT..

boot-loader install broke the box.
it installed grub into /dev/hda, not the USB drive
which is where the rest of the installation went.

I looked at the various VTs prior to hitting yes, to try to see which drive
it would hit, couldnt tell, and took it on faith that grub setup
would go to the right place.

( and wouldnt you know, the box owner (dad) hadnt made a startup disk )

It would be nice if the installer (or grub itself) were to take
a dd if=(target-device) of=(newroot)/root/$something.
That would have given me a way back.

unfortunately, MBRs borrowed from other machines hasnt fixed it.

yes, pls close.

After getting your feedback/responses (or someone elses, I cant remember)
I checked the on-screen wording, and /dev/hda was the best interpretation.
Idiot lights would have saved me some hassle, but Im not asking that they
be added.

IIRC (its been a while), the installation onto /dev/sda2 (the usb drive)
is bootable from at least some recent machines (I slapped on syslinux),
I just cant boot it from my laptop (apparent bios inadequacies)

thanks.
