I'm afraid I have no clue why it would hang at that point. You could try 
booting with 'noapic nolapic'.
You could also try debugging this with 'BOOT_DEBUG=2' or even '=3'.

Yes, I'm beginning to think this is a kernel bug in 2.6.8. For another 
example see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=279506.

However, a bug should be filed by someone who actually has the problem so 
the kernel maintainers can contact them for further information.
Feel free to do so.
