Bug#253161: installation-reports, sarge-i386-netinst (beta4)

Package: installation-reports

INSTALL REPORT

Debian-installer-version: sarge-i386-netinst.iso (beta4)
uname -a: Can't (see below)
Date: 3rd/4th June 2004
Method: boot of netinst CD, with incantation:
	linux26 debian-installer/framebuffer=false hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false
Machine: Compusys
Processor: Intel Pentium P4 3.0GHz
Memory: 2 x 512M DDR333
Root Device: IDE (120G Maxtor 6Y120L0); /dev/hda
Root Size/partition table:
(Discovered by booting Knoppix 3.4 CD and hand transcribing)
	hda1	NTFS 8422.69	XPpro system
	hda5	W95 FAT32 8422.69	XPpro data
	hda6	ext3 4999.94	/usr
	hda7	ext3 3000.07	/var
	hda8	ext3 20.13	/tmp
	hda9	ext3 97414.16	/home
	hda10	swap 512.49	swap
	hda3	ext3	Boot 150.19	/

hda1 shrunk down from entire-drive hda1 by Partition Magic v8.
hda2 and hda5 produced by PartMagic; hda2 originally just large enough
to enclose hda5. System booted OK (into XPpro) thereafter.
Other partitions produced by sarge build process, inc expanding hda2.

Output of lspci and lspci -n:

Comments/Problems:

Existing M$-XPpro successfully restricted to 8GByte hda1, and hda5 created as
detailed above, by employing Partition Magic v8. Install appeared to go well,
apart from the NTFS not being detected as bootable by the Grub install (as
expected, having seen the beta4 errata); made mistake of letting Grub install
into the MBR.

That was last thing last night, after which I let the system shut itself
down. This morning, all I get on boot is:

----
GRUB Loading stage1.5.

GRUB loading, please wait...
(hangs)
----

I'm now stuck with a customer's system which won't boot for itself,
and no readily apparent way to reinstate the XPpro MBR: amongst other
things, M$'98 boot floppies silently hang, so does the XPpro dist CD,
and a DOS-6 floppy boots but doesn't understand the partition types,
but a Knoppix CD can see everything. Annoyingly, I went through the
above procedure on another system as a pre-install test, and
succeeded; differences include the HD being 80G, the processor an
Athlon, and the build boot cmd using "linux" rather than "linux26".

Apologies for not being able to preserve the evidence, but the system
in question is needed, and I'm under pressure of time here. I've had
to resort to asking Compusys to replace the HD, or give me a working
image on the existing HD, under warranty.

Have I been spectacularly stupid :-) ,

	MaJoC
