I'd have thought so... but I'm getting the message
from lilo. There is also no /boot/boot.b. I tried 
commenting out both the install= and map= lines
to no effect. I have a message= line, but the
file it points to is my own, does exist and is
a non-zero length simple ascii file that I have 
not changed in several years.

I see nothing in the lilo changefile so far that
rings any alarm bells. I've basically no idea
what suddenly broke in my build sequence.
