While working on a raid1 conversion of a pre-existent installation, I
discovered that md and raid1 modules are not present on bf24 (CD1).
I don't know if they are present on some other kernel flavor at this
time.

Moreover all raidtools2 programs lack and also resize2fs.
They are all needed to convert in autoraid mode disks,
booting from installation disks.
You can find all details in the Software-RAID-HOWTO (sec 4.14).

I found that if conversion is done after net upgrades, resize2fs
could not work at all out of the chroot jail (some symbols missed).

I solved the issue just using the RH rescue disk, ugh!

They are. As modules.

Then sue your CD distributor, both tools are available in Woody. I also
recommend to use mdadm instead of raidtools.

What is your problem with it?

a) create a custom kernel with Raid and autodetection and boot from it
b) assuming you want RAID1: create a RAID1 with only one volume. Copy
your system to the filesystem on that raid. Chroot to that system, fix
the boot configuration there to boot with the new kernel.
c) Boot with the new Raid, set the type of your old partition to
LinuxRAID and use mdadm to enable it and start reconstruction.

What do you mean?

BTW, I made a plugin (extension) disk that you can use to create RAID0
while installing Debian. It still requires chroot'ing to the target
system (during the installation) and compiling a custom kernel, but it
works.
