Using slang frontend in make demo

I tried to fiddle with using the slang frontend in the demo tree.
However, even if I put /lib/libslang.so.1-UTF8 in EXTRALIBS, it got
reduced away by mklibs. How do I get mklibs to not remove it, as
/usr/lib/cdebconf/frontend/slang.so needs it...? Is the problem that
it's not +x?
