Re: Bug#130482: 3.0.19 show-stoppers

Uh. You didn't file bugs for the things you fixed, nor did you send a
patch to the BTS. That is incredibly poor form.

I just sent the patch to the BTS, I simply wanted to wait until the
package actually got installed. Sorry, I wasn't sitting at my PC
yesterday evening (GMT) when dinstall ran.

All initctl issues have been discussed in #130482 and the changes to
the base and required files for s390 were announcesd on debian-boot.
After reading REDAME.Debian doing an NMU seemed the preferred way to me.
Sorry if this was an incorrect interpretation. I'll submit a bug in this
case.

It worked fine on some architectures, and not others.

Are you talking about the boot-floppies or calling debootstrap from
a fully installed system? Looking at the debian-boot archives nobody
really tried this patch on the bt-f for any other architecture than s390.

If this is your attitude to the package, then you shouldn't be NMUing
the package. Either get it right, or don't do it at all.

This is my attitude towards including patches that have not been tested
with the b-f. Has the submitted of this patch tested debootstrap on the
b-f?

What are you expecting me to do? Yesterday, I tried bulding the current
CVS b-f for s390 and they failed after all base packages have been
installed and configured. Testing this takes at least 20 minutes
(depending on the available bandwith to the mirror) so it took me about
3 hours to find the problem. There are also other s390 porting problems
(see e.g. kernel-package) - I can't spend all my time on the b-f.

So please tell me how to do it right? b-f 3.0.18 worked on all
architectures using debootsrap 0.15.x (which did not contain the initctl
patch) and nobody other than me has successfully build CVS b-f with
debootstrap 0.1.16. To me, the correct way is to undo this change for
the b-f.

If this patch works on b-f for other archs (which I doubt) we can
enable it per architecture. If it does not work, I just saved the other
b-f portes some time by fixing the problem for their arch.
