Still, you need the kernel from somewhere, don't you? Where do you get it from if not rescue.bin ?
on m68k/ppc mac architectures, the kernel is loaded via boot loader(on m68k Penguin -18 or -17, on ppc BootX or yaboot(not sure how this one works). Anyway, BootX and Penguin -18 take a pre-compiled kernel that(for m68k) resided un the cd. The rescue.bin failed to install correctly for me for the longest time(no loop.o), i skipped this step and never really had any need to go back and install it(well not having the modules was a pain, but....)
