This is rather hard for me to believe.

Are you sure?  Are you able to ping another host on the network?

DHCP does work on pcmcia card, that is, when the pcmcia subsystem is
working.

This is a kernel bug, not a boot-floppies bug.  Somehow things kinda
got outta sync there.
