I didn't use a floppy, I created a CD from the ISO-Image at
ftp://ftp.gigabell.net/pub/debian-images/2.1_r4/i386/binary-i386-1.iso
and booted from that CD the normal kernel (label "linux")
BTW: I tried today with a older CD (2.1_r2), same effect
