Bug#61539: kernel hangs after loading the md driver

Package: boot-floppies
Version: no
debian 2.1R4

Hardware description

architecture: i386
model: Board is a ASUS K7M, Processor is AMD K7 Athlon 600 MHz
BIOS left on defaults, power management disabled
memory: 128M
scsi: none
cdrom: TOSHIBA XM-6702B, ATAPI, hdc
hd: IBM DPTA 372050, IDE, hda
video: ATI Rage Pro LT (AGP)
network card: none
pcmcia: none

Error Description

installation kernel is started from cdrom with "linux mem=128M"
the kernel reports memory correctly, detects IDE devices and stops after
loading the md driver
no error reporting, no kernel panic, system just stops.

I put another ram-module in, no change
removing even the ide-drive doesnt help.

as a try i installed on that machine a FreeBSD 3.4-RELEASE, worked fine.
So probably processor/board are ok.

Any known problems on that particular ASUS-Board ? I already installed
linux on severeal Athlons, but with a MSI board, everything worked
smoothly

Hope, anyone can give me a hint.
