Bug#59329: ppp problems may stem from kernel version mismatch

I just did a 2.2.7 install without running into this problem. I think the
ppp error may have reflected an error on my part, though there are several
possible theories.

The two biggest differences between this time and last were
1) I populated the disks-i386/current/compact directory
2) I loaded fewer drivers

In both cases I used the 1.44 compact boot floppies to kick things off;
however in this case I pointed to the hard disk right away.

So the key difference could be
1) the drivers.bin under disks-i386/current/disks-1.44/compact is screwy
2) Because I didn't have disks-i386/compact before, I picked up an
incompatible something (linux?  drivers?).
3) There is a conflict between the drivers.

2) seems most likely, though I'm not exactly sure what the incompatibility
would be.

An oddity of the install I did was that I ended up with the PCMCIA drivers,
though I didn't request them. Also, the compact drivers include ntfs, but
don't include vfat...
