Bug#59329: ppp driver will not load

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 2.2.7
Severity: Critical

The ppp driver will not load because of unresolved symbols
/lib/module/2.2.14/net/ppp.o. the nfs driver had similar problems,
suggesting a more general problem.

For anyone getting the rest of the install over a modem (e.g., myself!)
this prevents full installation, so I rate this as a critical bug. I don't
know if this is an issue with the driver, the kernel, or the integration,
so I'm filing under boot-floppies.

Here's a more detailed history:

I ran off the compact i386 distribution, 1.44 formats. I copied the larger
files to the first partition of my main drive, which is formatted vfat (Win
98. I do not use the latest format--FAT32?--because I need to see it from
NT).

I booted off diskettes for the initial install. I pointed it at the hard
drive for base2_2.

Things went smoothly until driver selection. Here are the drivers, in the
order I loaded them.
nfs -- failed with warnings about unresolved symbols in (from?) sunrpc.o
ntfs, vfat, awe_wave--all fine
joy_creative -- failed. Could be my hardware, or a conflict with awe_wave
lp--I'm not sure if I loaded it, or just wondered if I should
ppp--fails. Many unresolved symbols /lib/module/2.2.14/net/ppp.o.

I have an ISA USRobotics modem, which was working from debian around
boot-floppies 2.2.4.
