I would suggest you try booting with a 2.2 kernel, maybe the udma
flavour.

Even though you dont want to install debian 2.2 booting with the 2.2
kernel could help in diagnosing your problem. Also ive heard that athlon
systems need 2.4 for more that 64MB ram to be recognised.
