You and Harald are right that installing the backport kernel of an upcoming release often reveals issues that will affect the upcoming oldstable2stable upgrade. In other words, I agree with your assessment and reproducer, and I'd imagine a lot of people would appreciate knowing about in advance, so maybe also file a bug to have this added to the Release Notes for our upcoming release?
