surely some of them do *because* it is not available within the package
manager.  how else would they do it?  Shouldn't we try make available
the support and maintenance that distro-provided software can offer?

I'm not saying i'm happy about the level of instability in the
javascript/node/npm ecosystem -- it's very frustrating, and makes it
difficult to reason about what kind of guarantees you can expect from
your software stack.  But just because people do currently use unstable
software in deployment doesn't mean that's what they actually want to do
(or will want to do as their development and deployment practices
mature).
