What Stuart wrote is probably the reason, but in case it is not:

You could also try installing linux-image-4.17.0-0.bpo.3-amd64,
which is still available in stretch-backports.

I've had slightly similar, but not quite the same, hangs on one
system with 4.18, which may (or may not) be related to disk activity
from anacron+mlocate rebuilding the mlocate.db. This caused the
system slowing down to an unusable state in xdm or shortly after
logging in. Reverting to 4.17 solved these problems.
