Turns out that was indeed the problem!
With
MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=3.0 xbmc
I could start XBMC without it crashing!! The notebook here also has an
R200 video chip.

Thanks a lot for the pointer! I'm not so experienced with XBMC yet and
probably wouldn't have quickly realized this myself.
