If somebody likes to do this, I'm happy. If not, I will try
my luck. Any comments?

The current glib version will not work with squeeze. You need to
backport a lot of packages (gvfs, gnome-session, gdm3,
gnome-control-center, shared-mime-info…) if you want it as is. This is
because the URL handlers have migrated from GConf settings to
x-scheme-handler/* in MIME associations.

It should be simpler if you backport it but re-enable the patch that was
in version 2.28.6-1 to keep the old MIME system. Of course, if you need
it because of the new MIME system, you’re screwed.

Many thanks for this hint! No, I don't need the new MIME system,
so I will try to apply the patch. The patch can be found under
svn://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-gnome/desktop/unstable/glib2.0/
I assume?

Cheers
