kernel 2.6.18 with suspend2

Hello,

I'm trying to get suspend-to-disk working on a clean sarge install.
The stock kernel (2.6.8-3-686) supports suspend-to-mem, but -to-disk
is disabled and didn't work on a recompiled 2.6.8. That makes me
think I need either (a) a more recent kernel or (b) suspend2.

Trying (a), I learn that linux-image-2.6.18-4-686 needs a new udev,
which conflcits with hal, which makes USB disks automount. There is
no hal (>= 0.5.6-2) in backports.org.  So that's no good.  It's not
clear whether suspend-to-disk is enabled in that build anyway, or
whether it would work since 2.6.8 doesn't.

Trying (b), I follow the instructions by Janek Kozicki at
	http://lists.backports.org/lurker-bpo/message/20061010.162349.fe527997.en.html
The build (sudo debian/rules binary-arch) fails with

	python2.4 debian/bin/abicheck.py debian/build/build-i386-none-686 i386 none 686
	ABI has changed! Refusing to continue.

	Added symbols:
	suspend_state                                    module: vmlinux

	Changed symbols:
	__clear_user                                     version: 0x2455c156 -> 0xf3341268
	[about 50 other changed symbols]

This is opaque to me. Perhaps I have to register the suspend2 patch with
debian's build system but I have no idea how to do that.

Tring (c): help!
