You may want to try gcc-3.4.

Export GCC=gcc-3.4, GXX=g++-3.4, CPP=cpp-3.4 and CXXPP=cpp-3.4 before
calling configure in debian/rules (and build-depend on gcc/g++-3.4)

At least that's what I did for the firebird backport.
