boot problem image 2.6.17-686

Hi there,

I have a problem booting the linux-image 2.6.17-686.

the machine stops with a kernel-panic unable to access the root-fs.  This 
appears after mounting the cramfs initrd image. 

kernelcommandline is with root=/dev/hda3

grub installed.

I found a hint, that I have to modify the yaird templates, is this true?

machine: 

686 smp on a Epox MB with HPT370 chipset (no drive attached)

Any suggestions to solve this problem welcome.
