(I forgot to post this to the list before.)
I got a ton of output, but it looks like it works. (If you really do want
the full output let me know, but below is simplified output.)
jcc02003-1:~# /sbin/update-grub
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub .
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.list file... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst .
Searching for splash image... none found, skipping...
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-1-486
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8-2-386
Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done
jcc02003-1:~# echo $?
0
