You should probably ask on the Hardkernel forum, here:

It's likely that your /etc/apt/sources.list includes a mixture
of Debian repositories and others from mdrjr.  The mdrjr repos
should contain suitable kernels.  I forget exactly what you
have to do to install them.  A couple of minutes research
suggests that you should be able to get a 3.8 kernel, if not
newer.  I think you're unlikely to get a "current" kernel -
though maybe if you want to run headless there is a chance of
that.

I've no idea if this will fix your USB SATA issue.
