I understand your concern, Paul.  But the reality is that any networked appliance that loses security support is in the same position. From that viewpoint, the SS4000E should be junked because the OEM stopped supporting it some time ago.  And how many people bothered to even update the OEM firmware to 1.2, much less to the final version 1.4?

I don't mean to downplay a valid concern, but internet appliances lose support all the time and they don't get thrown out.  Fortunately, most people have their systems behind a good firewall.  And without a browser or any active internet access, the risks are extremely small for my new SS4000.

BTW, Debian squeeze is end-of-life (no security support) on ARM-based
devices including the Intel SS4000E. I suggest you upgrade to jessie
if you can or disconnect the machine from the Internet or any other
machines that connect to the Internet.
