not quite the only method. there is the USB FEL tools (sunxi-tools),
you can compile a version of u-boot which creates a FEL/SPL loader,
then you can use that to boot a kernel which has NAND support. the
last one i found which did this was cb2-3.4.
lots of other people know a bit more about this, what the current status is.
