RPi Foundation have just (10 hours ago!) announced a 10000 dollar
bounty for whoever manages to get an open-source GPU driver working
first.

http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/6299

earlier the same day, "Broadcom announced[1] full documentation for
the VideoCore IV graphics core, and a complete source release of the
graphics stack under a 3-clause BSD license"

That only leaves the problem of having to develop a free open-source
driver in secret so that someone else doesn't steal your work and
clain the 10000, thereby losing most of the advantages of open source
development...
