(Feeling VERY sheepish) You're right. Just copying the file over and not gzipping it works fine. I knew it was something simple. I can't believe how many days I spent on this before breaking down and asking here!
So although mmcblk0p2 is available, it looks like the system can't mount it for some reason.Can you use kpartx on the image and mount in the host? What filesystem ended up on it? Are you sure it is the rootfs and not e.g. swap? Ian.
I already did that - in fact I mounted the virtual disk as an NDB mount and verified all of the partitions were ok.
