I know this is a few months old now but... yes. There is a way to run debian on a sharespace but it involves all sorts of stuff up to and including building custom kernels and a bit of soldering right now. I'm looking at it again at the moment.

One thing I would say though, there is no real performance increase available here. You can get it to be a fully fledged headless server, but you can't get it to go a lot faster in terms of data transfer etc. The bottleneck seems to be the CPU.
