By configureing the initramfs system, the size can be reduced, e.g. edit 
/etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf:

# /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf
# replace "most" with "dep"
MODULES=dep

The initrd size dropped down to 3.4M.

Anyone out there know of any pitfalls in this approach?? I.e. are all 
the crucial modules included in the initrd?

I'll wait awhile before trying a reboot.
