incidentally i have committed an almost identical patch to the git
maintainer repository of Gem at alioth a few hours ago (well, there are
only so many ways how you can fix the bug...)
hopefully paul or günther (or some other debian maintainer) will upload
the package soon...
i also have put the fixed package onto mentors
