I don't see that this would work because part of the installation
procedure is to write the kernel image and initramfs to the NSLU2
flash.

Sounds like a pretty good solution. Save the kernel deb for 2.6.26
from testing to your a directory on the NSLU2, and then have an init
script run 'dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.26-1-ixp4xx_2.6.26-5_armel.deb'.
You probably want to run 'halt' at the end of this init script so that
the system shuts down once the installation is finished.
