Yes, it is possible. I have two slugs with 2.5" drives attached. The first is a 120 Gig Hitachi in a cheap enclosure and the second is a 160 Gig Western Digital Passport. Both are running Debian, and have been in service for 21 and 13 months, respectively. The Hitachi drive never exceeds the 5 W USB maximum power, but the WD peaks at 7 W for about 250 ms on startup. This hasn't caused any problems so far. I would expect the larger capacity 2.5" drives have higher power draw on startup, so YMMV.
