Well I didn't think that I would reply to my own email so quickly 8-).

When I rebooted linux just now (I write my emails from RISC OS) the problem
seems to have gone. depmod doesn't crash anymore. Unfortunatly I can not
recall what I have done exactly yesterday what could have solved the
problem. I know that I enabled 2.2.16-rmk3 again yesterday and did a depmod,
but this complained about not being able to find ether3 (which is correct
ofcourse).

Anyway I don't have the problem any longer and I am happy with that.
