The mysql home page lists some incompatibilities. It would be very
interesting to know if this problem also appears with mysql server
5.0.

What do you mean with defunct? Does top show the process as "defunct"
or is it just doing nothing? If the latter, could you please provide
a backtrace, as described in

This should be the case.

Have you configured apache to use mod_dbd with mysql in this case?
